The ISC Wheaten Terrier

The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a friendly, affectionate, medium-sized dog, known for its soft, silky-smooth coat. The breed originates from Ireland, where it served as a versatile working dog, covering everything from livestock herding to watchdog duties. The Wheaten Terrier was known for its ability to work under tough conditions, and had a reputation for being fearless and strong. It wasn’t registered as a breed in Ireland until 1937. Up until then, it was only considered a farm hound.

The Wheaten is a wonderful breed for active families, and those who don’t mind providing a little extra coat care.

Overview of the breed

Appearance

The Wheaten Terrier’s most striking feature is its soft, wavy and silky smooth coat, which is often described as “wheaten” in colour. Their coat, which is mainly a pale wheat colour with nuances of a deeper golden shade, is the source of the breed’s name. The Wheaten has a wide, expressive face, dark round eyes, and a black muzzle, giving it a friendly appearance. This is a robust terrier with a cheerful personality-a dog that loves people.

Temperament

The Wheaten Terrier is renowned for its affectionate, loyal, and friendly nature, which causes it to form a strong bond with its family and to enjoy people’s company. They are energetic and playful, which makes them the perfect companion for people who want to pursue different activities with their dog. Though enthusiastic about play, they also enjoy winding down and taking a rest with their owners.

Wheaten terriers are clever and learn quickly, but they can also be independent and sometimes even a bit stubborn, which can pose challenges when training them. They generally get along famously both with other animals and with children, which makes them the ideal choice for families.

Grooming

The Wheaten’s soft coat does not shed, and it needs to be brushed regularly to avoid matting or tangling. It should also be trimmed regularly.
